JANE EASTOE    Book Number: 86465    Product format: Hardback

Big and blousy, crinkly and perfumed, vintage and old roses have seductive qualities and produce graceful, generous, fragrant and accommodating flowers, bewitching to both the eye and nose. Author Jane Eastoe has written for the National Trust and her practical experience of growing roses in Kent, combined with her love of historical research and her fashion sensibility, makes her the ideal candidate to write this refreshingly up-to-date appreciation of vintage roses. Her big heavyweight and lavishly illustrated and designed volume celebrates the ageless style and grace of the world's favourite flower. We are shown how easy it is to grow these beautiful blooms and fill your home with spectacular cut flowers. From strikingly simple to deliciously overblown, over 60 roses have been captured by leading floral photographer Georgianna Lane like the Rose de Rescht brought back from Iran with dark pink flowers packed with wavy, ruffled feathers that turn a lovely purple-pink as they mature, Tasogare, a sugary, sweet-pea lavender in hue from Japan with a dainty, frilled-petticoat petal and the miss-named Vanity, for aside from its rich, sugar-pink colour, it is quite a modest rose introduced in 1920 with blooms that unfurl to 7cms and an artful circlet of thick yellow stamens that are loved by bees. This Hybrid Musk rose has a good, musky perfume. For each there is a lovely description and all about flowering, aspect, soil, habitat, average height and spread, pruning and foliage, thorns, as a cut flower and similar varieties. Plus a short history of roses and all about pruning and care. A beautifully produced large volume of 240pp packed with colour photos.
