SCOTLAND AND THE SEA

SCOTLAND AND THE SEA

NICK ROBINS    Book Number: 85929    Product format: Hardback

Scotland's maritime heritage is unparalleled. For centuries the greatest shipbuilding nation in the world it has been the home of the engineering, ship-owning and entrepreneurial skills that were crucial to the development of the British commercial and political empire and Great Britain becoming the world's leading maritime power in the 19th century. As well as being the bedrock of the Merchant Navy, Scottish emigrants took their maritime skills to every corner of the world, creating wealth and facilitating trade at home and abroad. In engineering terms "Clyde-built" was the benchmark for the shipbuilding industry the world over. Scottish shipowners had huge influence over trading routes and in fact many "English" companies such as Cunard, British India and P&O were part-founded and managed by Scotsmen. The navigational skills of the Highlanders and technological and business acumen of the Lowlanders were fundamental in the development of steam power and the exploration and establishment of the first trading routes and the final flowering of the world's last great iron sailing ships. Nick Robins has written widely on the subject of maritime history and in particular the Merchant Navy. Other than his vast knowledge as demonstrated in the narrative, what makes this book so special is the range and quality of illustration, some 200 b/w photos and paintings which date back to the early Victorian period up to just a few years ago which capture in all their glory some of the most majestic vessels to ever put out to sea, as well as the delightfully grubby tramp steamers and little island-hopping ferries and some of the foremost names in Scottish shipping. 282pp.
