FROM CLERK TO CONTROLLER: A Life on the Railways 1957-1996

RODERICK FOWKES    Book Number: 85919    Product format: Hardback

Life trying to get onto the footplate for a youngster whose dreams of becoming an Engine Driver were dashed in 1956, when a medical at Derby revealed he had not obtained the required colour vision level and was therefore unsuitable for the footplate grade. However in 1957 he began a 39 year career at Trent Station as Junior Porter, and later a Telegraph Clerk. After six years he moved to Leicester and then Nottingham where he was 'in Control for five years'. Later he was a Traction Arranger at the largest installation in Western Europe, Toton Traction Maintenance Depot. In 1978, Roderick Fowkes moved to Plymouth as Movements Supervisor at Laira Traction & Rolling Stock Depot for an interesting final 18 years in the South West. Reflecting on the demise of steam in the 1960s, the book is filled with memorable anecdotes, lack of customer care in the early 1980s, summer holiday season on the Cardiff and Cornwall lines, and perhaps best of all the hundreds of colour and archive photos, nostalgic scenes, programmes and letters in facsimile depicting the glory days on British Railways. A Pen & Sword publication, 248 glossy pages, colour.
