ANNA BEER    Book Number: 85884    Product format: Hardback

When the young musician Rebecca Clarke won a big prize with her violin sonata in 1919 it was widely suggested that it must have been written by a man under a pseudonym. A hundred years earlier, before her marriage to Robert Schumann, Clara Wieck said "a woman must not desire to compose". Clara maintained her career as a highly praised performer - women were allowed to interpret - but the idea of women as original creators was a step too far. This groundbreaking book tells the stories of eight women composers. Aged 15, Francesca Caccini created a sensation when she sang at the 17th century French court of Marie de Medici. Her father was unwilling to lose control of his lucrative daughter, but Caccini finally won acclaim as a composer with the operatic work The Slavegirl. The Venetian Barbara Strozzi is famous for the portrait in which one of her breasts is exposed, leading to speculation that she was a courtesan. It appears she had several children with Giovanni Vidman, but meanwhile from 1651 she asserted her own voice as a composer in a series of increasingly virtuosic works. Even in 2015 she was described as "too sexy" for performance in church. Fanny Hensel, Mendelssohn's sister, was a virtuoso performer encouraged by her father, who also hired a teacher of composition for her. But he objected to Fanny's public career, prompting her to convert from Judaism to Christianity in order to reinforce her acceptance in genteel social circles. Even in the 20th century the Irish Elizabeth Maconchy had to fight to pursue a modern continental style. Others discussed in this eye-opening book are Elisabeth Jacquet De La Guerre, Marianna Martines and Lili Boulanger. 368pp, photos.
