FAIRY LEGENDS

T. CROFTON CROKER    Book Number: 85573    Product format: Paperback

First published in 1825, the book is sub-titled 'Traditions of the South of Ireland: The New Series, Two Volumes in One, Embellished with Numerous Engravings and Woodcuts.' A Bard's bible, this is the earliest and one of the most comprehensive studies of Irish folklore ever undertaken. It lovingly collects tales and fables from peasants and storytellers in the early 19th century, capturing the last days of an ancient culture about to transform forever. The stories are represented under five categories - Tales of the Merrow (Mermaid), The Dullahan (Headless Fairy), The Fir Darrig (Mischievous Fairy with Red Coat and Cap), Treasure Legends and those concerned with Rocks and Stones. There are wonderfully named stories like Flory Cantillon's Funeral, Diarmid Bawn the Piper, Ned Sheehy's Excuse, Dreaming Tim Jarvis and The Giant's Stairs. Thomas Crofton Croker was an Irish antiquary born in Cork in 1798 who at various times edited The Keepsake, Fraser's Magazine and Gentlemen's Magazine. Beautiful line art and woodcut illus, 328pp in paperback.
