CHARLES SIMPSON: Painter of Animals and Birds

JOHN BRANFIELD    Book Number: 85300    Product format: Hardback

Painter of animals and birds, coastline and moorland, Charles Simpson was a leading figure in the St. Ives art colony in the early 1920s and was a painter of great energy and variety. He entered the Bushey School of Painting run by the animal painter Lucy Kemp-Welch and stayed on a farm at St. Erth in Cornwall before settling in Newlyn where he gained the respect of the artistic community for his pastoral paintings and seascapes with gulls. In 1913 he married Ruth Alison, a promising student at the Forbes School, and together they established the St. Ives School of Art, where Ruth taught portraiture. Charles exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy. Enjoy his pictures of his wife and daughter Leonora or students on the beach, huge impressionistic canvases of the estuary in the early morning light: the Flight of the Wild Duck won a Silver Medal at the Paris Salon in 1923 and Duck Shooting - The Punt Gunner won the Gold the following year. The 22 paintings of The Herring Season record the activities of the fishing industry in St. Ives. Another documentary series contains 80 paintings of birds found along the shore and cliffs. In 1924, Simpson moved to London and in the following decade wrote and illustrated books on the rodeo, hunting, Emily Brontë before returning with Ruth to Cornwall to produce books on photography and art. Living in Lamorna, he returned to painting the coastline and his favourite subject - ducks on the stream or mill pond. In dappled sunlight they move serenely across the water conveying endless peace and timelessness. Includes The Rodeo in a Horse and Hunts section, two horses in Autumn Sunset plus many black and white photos alongside the colour images. 134pp, softback, 8" x 10¼".
