HISTORY OF THE ROD

HISTORY OF THE ROD

WILLIAM M. COOPER    Book Number: 85138    Product format: Hardback

This famous book was first published in 1865 and in its own day inhabited a peculiar borderland between 'medical' and 'risqué', inclining rather towards the latter. It is an astounding history of flagellation from biblical times to the High Medieval period to the author's own era, when birch-rod, strap and cane were still very much in use around the world, especially in Britain. The rod was used primarily for exciting and arousing and here are anecdotes and incidents which have appeared in anthologies and other collections and private publications over the years and flawed or not, they are a major source. Especially disturbing is the beautiful Madame Lapuchin being knouted by order of Elizabeth, Empress of Russia, a Russian solider flailing a long whip as the beautiful woman is stripped naked to the waist and then leaned over the back of a second soldier. Covers flagellation among the Jews, Romans, in monasteries and convents, among the Carmelites, Cistercians, Franciscans and similar religious orders, Dominicans and in connection with the Inquisition, among the Jesuits, and sects of flagellants, penal flagellation, the whipping of thieves, in Bridewell and other prisons and the reputed curative and medicinal powers of the rod. Also the rod in Russia, Africa, America, the flogging of slaves, in France, Germany and Holland, military flogging, and anecdotes of the domestic birch at home and anecdotes of school punishments and the birch in the boudoir. 437pp with 20 illustrations in a revised and corrected edition of the 1865 original.
