EXPERIENCES OF FLAGELLATION

EXPERIENCES OF FLAGELLATION

AN AMATEUR FLAGELLANT    Book Number: 85136    Product format: Hardback

First printed in London in 1885 for private circulation, the original owner of the copyright of the material in this book was the husband of Mrs Isabella Beeton, Samuel Orchart Beeton. A successful publisher in his own right, he made his initial fortune by infringing American authors' copyright and serialising his wife's work in 'The English Woman's Domestic Magazine' in 1852 which gained notoriety three years after his wife's death. It was then that it published a letter in its correspondence section on the subject of corporal punishment and in particular in relation to the whipping of young girls. Understandably the magazine was flooded with letters offering advice and experiences and naturally sales soared. The Daily Telegraph, Punch and other journals and newspapers of the time attacked it by suggesting that many of the letters were penned by Samuel himself to boost circulation, an accusation he denied. This facsimile reprint, a rare 2001 hardback, is sub-titled 'A Series of Remarkable Instances of Whipping Inflicted on Both Sexes with Curious Anecdotes of Ladies Fond of Administering Birch Discipline.' A book very much of its time since it involves young people and their punishment and in today's terms "a whole world of unnatural and indefensible private cruelty." Read the true story of Father Girard and Miss Cadiere, wife beating, the flagellating monks and the bear, flogging and cruelty in a Glasgow industrial school and of Mr D, a gentleman of fortune, excessively fond of the rod. 120pp. Rare.
