BRUCE OF LOS ANGELES: American Photography of the Male Nude

BRUCE OF LOS ANGELES    Book Number: 85019    Product format: Paperback

All the male nudes captured by Bruce's camera are revelling joyfully in their own bodies and nudity. Starting with a profile shot of a quiffed bodybuilder in a loincloth, wasp-waisted and with oiled skin, Bruce moves on to fully nude woodland shots in which the unclothed penis is an expression of the natural man. Contrasting shots of the same model face each other across double spreads, including a blonde male in discus-throwing positions or straddling a wooden barrier against a backdrop of hills. Born in 1909 in small-town Nebraska, Bruce had to shake off conventional attitudes as he pursued a career immortalising body-builders and young men in frankly homoerotic poses. An influence on Robert Mapplethorpe, his work lacks the sophistication of the later master but is an unrivalled expression of enjoyment of the male physique. 'Single white models' and 'Single black models' involve full-frontal nudity in expressive poses, while 'Couples' features attitudes of wrestling, tug of war and exploration. Several amusing shots show body-builders preening among admiring bikini-clad female beauty contestants, and the humour continues in the section 'Erections', in which several of the muscle-bound heroes seem to be looking in some surprise at their erect member. A collection of colour photos concludes. Over 120 full page photos in black and white and colour, softback.
