ALLOTMENT GARDENING: Finding, Planning, Maintaining

ALLOTMENT GARDENING: Finding, Planning, Maintaining

JEZ ABBOTT    Book Number: 83651    Product format: Paperback

One of the green guides series, this is an excellent and colourful guide to all aspects of allotment gardening, complete with a directory of suggested vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers. Check your new allotment plot to see which weeds are growing there as by doing this you can learn from them the condition and type of soil, which in turn will help with your planting. The author describes the various tools that you will need and the importance of planning your allotment layout. He recommends the best crops to grow and explains the virtues of windbreaks, compost heaps and water butts. Apart from the advantage of fresh produce whenever you want, other benefits include making new friends in the community and getting lots of exercise with all the digging, weeding and trundling of wheelbarrows. Plenty of hints and tips are included such as a warning not to grow potatoes near tomatoes as, being of the same family, they may infect each other with disease. The author also suggests that you could make part of your plot a wildlife habitat by piling up logs to attract hedgehogs, putting up bird boxes and digging a small pond. By erecting a bench or keeping a garden chair on your allotment you can relax with a cuppa and watch nature taking its course. Softback. 256pp. Colour photos.
