FRANCIS BACON IN YOUR BLOOD: A Memoir

FRANCIS BACON IN YOUR BLOOD: A Memoir

MICHAEL PEPPIATT    Book Number: 83230    Product format: Paperback

As a student, the would-be journalist Michael Peppiatt was desperate to get an interview with the artist Francis Bacon, famous for his visceral studies of screaming popes and dismembered bodies. Newly appointed as editor of the student magazine Cambridge Opinion, Peppiatt had grandly announced that the first issue would be on Modern Art. Now all he had to do was write the copy. Heading down to London on the suggestion of a friend, he located the photographer John Deakin, said to be an intimate of Bacon's, and demanded to speak to the master himself. Soon he was ensconced with a camp, hedonistic group, surrounded by endless platters of oysters and Chablis. Lucian Freud argues with Bacon about his grandfather the great Freud, and then they discuss whether all Cubism is prefigured in Cezanne. The scene is the start of a lifelong friendship in which Bacon holds forth about art and life, often with interjections from his equally famous friends. Even when Peppiatt moves to an editorial job in Paris, Bacon is soon on the phone because the two painters he most admires, Picasso and Giacometti, are also there. In a Paris bar Michael sits next to a drunken Marlene Dietrich on a banquette, while another day he spots Samuel Beckett in the street, but it is Francis and his circle who provide the real intellectual excitement. Finally, married and in New York, Peppiatt falls out with Bacon who unexpectedly screams abuse at him about the imminent birth of his child, Clio, but he mourns deeply when he reads of the artist's death. 401pp, paperback.
