ANOTHER LIGHT: Jacques-Louis David to Thomas Demand

ANOTHER LIGHT: Jacques-Louis David to Thomas Demand

MICHAEL FRIED    Book Number: 83070    Product format: Hardback

Born in New York and educated at the greatest establishments in the US and England, Michael Fried is one of the most esteemed and influential art critics and art historians working today. Another Light was published in 2014 and comprises eight major essays written between 1993 and 2013. As always with Fried's writing, the emphasis falls equally between observation and argument and never before have these artists (and one critic, Roger Fry) been subject to a gaze of such clarity and force, laying bare the meaning and content of their respective works. Another aspect of Fried's work, one that keeps him at the pinnacle of his profession, is its extraordinary originality, the way in which he compares, contrasts and spots similarities with works that appear, on the face of it, so very different in every way. Here, for example, we have two essays which finds fascinating links between the work of French Neo-classicist Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) firstly with Edouard Manet and secondly with Jean-Paul Marat. Other essays examine Theodore Gericault's Romanticism, Orientation in the work of Caspar David Friedrich and Gustave Courbet, Caillebotte's Impressionism, art critic and Bloomsbury Group scholar Roger Fry and finally, the last two examine in detail two films: Douglas Gordon's "k.364: A journey by Train" of 2011, and Thomas Demand's "Pacific Sun", a 122 second long stop/start montage of still taken from the CCTV footage of the bar on a cruise ship during a fearful storm in 2008. With 199 mostly colour illus and copious notes as one would expect, this is an art history/criticism like no other. 330pp, 7¾"×10¼".
