CASTLE DROGO: The National Trust DVD
Bibliophile price: £1.50
This famed house in remotest Devon was built by a celebrity architect for a rich tycoon, Sir Julius Drewe, owner of the Army & Navy stores chain. Castle Drogo was never truly finished, yet successive generations of owners completed and sustained the building, finally donating it to the nation via the National Trust. Narrated by Nigel Havers, this 59 minute colour DVD beautifully shows this mesmerising place with views of the property and grounds from inside and out including aerial shots, a history of the house and its owners and interviews with NT experts. Situated at a height of nearly 300 metres within the Dartmoor National Park, Castle Drogo was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and built between 1911 and 1931. It is a masterpiece in granite that blends into the landscape giving it the appearance of having been there for centuries. It combines the grandeur of a medieval castle with the interior of a country house and the 12 acre garden reflects the architectural vision of the castle. Planting was influenced by Gertrude Jekyll and the garden's varied walks throughout the surrounding Teign Gorge provides spectacular views. Colour DVD.
