DREAM CATCHERS: Legend, Lore and Artifacts

DREAM CATCHERS: Legend, Lore and Artifacts

CATH OBERHOLTZER    Book Number: 80005    Product format: Hardback

Originating in Native American culture, probably with the Ojibwa branch of the Algonquins, the Dream Catcher is a netted charm originally hung over the bed of a disturbed child to ward off bad dreams. In most forms of the legend, the net catches the bad dreams and lets the good ones through. They are considered functional in many other situations, however, and can be employed to protect a vehicle operator or to shield a computer from viruses. Dream Catchers can be bought in souvenir shops. Their popularity with non-Native people stems from the fact that they remind us of our creativity and mystical capacity, and in this way they cross cultural boundaries and unite people of different backgrounds. The many beautiful examples in this book include both artefacts created by Native Americans and also artworks by contemporary artist Nick Huard who is inspired by the concept. Among its gorgeous illustrations a Nakoda Sioux beaded velveteen moss bag for carrying a baby is adorned with a co-ordinating beaded charm, while a circular Cree net charm on a stick is filled with open-mesh silk embroidery in red, white and blue. Netting is connected in most cultures with legends of the Spider, who in Lakota Sioux culture also has the wisdom associated with a shapeshifting trickster. The largest Dream Catcher in the world however, on Route 99 near Meteor City, Arizona, is unashamedly devoted to capturing tourists. 144pp, colour photos.
