The template for many future writers

These stories stand alone in much the same way that M..R..James scholarly tales of haunted cloisters do, but in this case the eponymous hero actively seeks out the phenomena with an open mind that accepts that there is a natural explanation for most "hauntings". As indeed there is with medieval traps and modern criminality at the bottom of things lending a prosaic ending to several stories. Then just as you start to believe that everything is capable of rational explanation in storms the supernatural with the power to blast the soul of the investigator. The biggest mystery to my mind is how these stories have never been turned into decent films or television (there was a version of the Horse of the Invisible starring Donald Pleasance years ago on BBC) as they themselves to a strong visual interpretation. In the meantime enjoy classic stories and see if you can spot all the plot lines hijacked by later authors.
