Deric Longden
Deric Longden is our Editor Annie's step-dad. Thora Hird received a BAFTA for Best Actress in his screenplay of LOST FOR WORDS and they flew to NEW YORK to pick up an EMMY! His first book DIANA'S STORY was also a film starring Thora and Jim Broadbent as Deric. The film was called Wide Eyed and Legless. Pete Postlethwaite played Deric and Julie Walters, Diana. Both books have gone out of print, so now Bibliophile has, as a publisher, created eBooks of both titles which are available on Amazon Kindle.

I have a progressive muscle wasting disease which has left me paralysed from the neck down and whilst I maintain a good quality of life, as a prolific reader one of the things I used to find most frustrating was the fact that I could no longer access conventional paperback books. I think it's fair to say I missed reading more than anything else so when my parents gave me an Amazon Kindle for Christmas I was elated!
I've been a big fan of Deric Longden's books for approximately 20 years, I bought all of his books and read them at least once a year, my favourites three or four times a year. I was delighted when I discovered Dianas Story & Lost for Words in Amazon's Kindle shop and purchased them both immediately. However, I would love to read The Cat Who Came in from the Cold and the other titles, please could you tell me if there are any plans for Derics other titles to be converted into digital format?
Whilst I don't think you can beat real books I think it's fair to say that digital books and E readers have enabled me to enjoy my passion for reading again but I do find it frustrating that apart from old classics which have gone beyond copyright there aren't many books printed within the last 20 or 30 years being converted into digital format which is a shame as I think there's a market.

Thanks for sending this on to me Annie. I met Nikki once, she lives in Scarborough I believe. She was a wonderful girl who lived life in a wheelchair. She was completely paralysed and used a tube, down which she had to blow in order to use her computer and practically everything else in her room. She gave me a display of her talents, making a mistake, at which point everything in her room went berserk. Shower curtains opening and shutting at a rate of knots - computer going berserk - toilet seat going up and down. Her little dog also went berserk, barking his head off and running around in circles until normality was restored. She is a wonderful woman and a lesson to all of us. If you reply - give her my love and tell her I remember her fondly.

I'm so glad you remember visiting me at my home Deric, I had a wonderful afternoon talking to you and Aileen and sharing our passion for books, writing, animals and home-made butterfly buns!
My equipment still goes berserk from time to time but it keeps us on our toes, unless of course it's the electronic bed doing its own thing in which case it's anyone's guess where I will end up but I often resemble a paperclip by the time we've got it under control.
Sadly we no longer have Charlie, the little Yorkshire terrier dog we rescued and whose favourite occupation was impersonating a merry-go-round. However, we still have Jess the old collie dog, Banjo the talkative African Grey parrot who can't resist doing a wolf whistle and kissing noise whenever I'm on speakerphone and we have three more additions to the family, Kizzy, Maisie and Daisy, Lhasa Apsos with big characters who I think should be renamed Lhasa ASBOs!
Meeting you and Aileen remains one of my favourite memories and I'm hoping that I'll soon be able to enjoy the rest of your books when they are available in e-book format. Thanks for all the pleasure and laughter you and your books have given me over the years.

Hi Annie,
You don't know how happy you've made me by telling me that you and Martyn are working hard to get the rest of Deric's titles put into digital e-book format. I realise the magnitude of the task ahead of you and my excitement at knowing this is in progress fills me with happiness and I now feel like a child waiting for Christmas to see if Santa has brought me the long-awaited etch-a-sketch.
It saddens me every time I look across at my bulging bookshelves, recognise old favourites but know that I can't read them although it makes my heart glad to know that those in the business are gradually embracing digital e-books safe in the knowledge that they will never replace books made from trees!

Thank you so much for the wonderful stories you've written. I discovered your cat books when I was in my early 20s, and I have savored every one as I read them. Over the years, I have had the pleasure of introducing these books to other cat lovers in my life. My 9 year old step-daughter, Isabelle, insists on having a chapter read to her every night at bedtime. It's such a delight to hear her giggling over Thermal's antics, and it has really spurred her imagination in relation to our own feline companions. She often tells stories about Thief and Moonlight's adventures, which have evolved from the oral tradition into the written tradition by way of her classwork in school.
I read the article in the Examiner last month and was saddened to hear of your health problems. Please know that prayers, warm thoughts, and gratitude are coming your way from our neck of the woods.
