CARTIER TIME ART: Mechanics of Passion

JACK FORSTER    Book Number: 83850    Product format: Hardback

A showcase for the Cartier fine watchmaking collection, this gorgeous book features iconic pieces in which there is a perfect fusion of mechanics and design. The Astroregulateur leads the field, with the escarpment components mounted on an oscillating weight that powers the automatic winding system. Other world-beating pieces are the Flying Tourbillon skeletons and the Rotonde de Cartier Jumping Hours. The first part of the book features historic Cartier watch designs, with sections on the mechanics of movement design, conservation and restoration, and the Geneva Seal. 150 Cartier timepieces were featured in the exhibition which this book accompanies, including astronomical timepieces and a range of technically demanding mystery clocks, so-called because the mechanism is concealed. Sumptuous photos take the reader through the Cartier experience during 100 years of production. An exquisite mystery clock from 1922 is a miracle of Art Deco design with its black and gold geometrical stand. An egg-shaped eight-day green enamel and gold clock with annular dial dates from 1907, while a series of diamond and platinum encrusted wrist watches capture the opulent flavour of the Edwardian era. An "Egyptian" striking clock from 1927 features fashionable lapis lazuli and mother of pearl inscribed with hieroglyphs. Not only does Rudolf Valentino wear a Tank watch in Son of the Sheik, but even Andy Warhol is pictured glaring at the camera wearing one of his famed collection of Cartier Tanks. Other celebrities to model Cartier watches include Marlene Dietrich in Paris in 1938, her beret at a rakish angle, Clark Gable, Catherine Deneuve, Igor Stravinsky and Duke Ellington. 266pp, lavishly illustrated with gorgeous colour art photography, timeline.
