WORLD TREE STORY: History and Legends

JULIAN HIGHT    Book Number: 83631    Product format: Hardback

The oldest trees on the planet today have probably stood for about 4,000 years, and in this fascinating book the author travels the world to encounter 100 venerable trees across 39 countries, Scotland and Ireland, Spain and Palestine, Sri Lanka, Canada, Madagascar to Easter Island. Here's a five-year odyssey to photograph 100 ancient and historic trees. Among the world's most famous trees are the Giant Sequoias in King's Canyon National Park, California, where the sequoia named after President Ulysses S. Grant is a national monument, while the President Harding tree is the oldest at 3,200 years. "Il Patriarca" in Santo Baltolu on Sardinia may be Italy's oldest tree at around four millennia and is one of three ancient wild olives, suggesting that it was not after all the Phoenicians who introduced the olive to Sardinia. On Tenerife, dominated by the towering mountain El Teide, stands the largest pine in the world, about 1000 years old. The Sycomore Figs of Egypt are said to have sheltered the Holy Family fleeing from the wrath of King Herod, and the oldest surviving example dates from the 17th century. Nearer to home, the Jenischpark Oaks in Hamburg include a hollow 400-year specimen, comparable with the giant oak known as Majesty at Nonington in Kent, which legend says shelters a ghostly white horse on stormy nights. Other British trees in the collection are the 2000-year Darley Dale Yew in Derbyshire, close to a church whose carvings include the fertility goddess Sheela-na-gig, and the Marton Oak in Cheshire, contemporary with the Saxon king Offa.
