These exceptionally beautiful engravings were originally published in 'Old and New London' 1873-8 by Cassel published in a six volume work. It was written in part by Walter Thornbury who traced the city's origins from earliest times. The chosen engravings for this special new edition have been coloured from the original monochrome in 2015 by Ian Cramer. See world famous places in the heart of the capital as they were in the 1870s and travel to the suburbs for revealing glimpses of life in past times. From a drawing by David Roberts is the coronation procession of Anne Boleyn to Westminster Abbey, the old view of St. James's Palace before the Great Fire of London with its beautifully laid out and vast gardens, the coronation of George IV in Westminster Hall from Gentleman's Magazine, a Milk Fair in St. James's Park, old houses in Holborn, the Shakespeare Gallery Pall Mall, Cheyne Walk and Cadogan Pier in 1860 (little changed), the Old Manor House Mary-Le-Bone in the time of Queen Elizabeth from an old print, two couples dancing a Quadrille, an almost rural Kennington from the green in 1780, the Turkish Bath in Jermyn Street (interior shot of semi-clothed gentlemen) plus Hampstead, Islington, the Thames, St. Paul's, Westminster, Covent Garden, Billingsgate in 1820, the Royal Dockyard Deptford in 1860 with its tall-masted ships, Greenwich in 1815 with a farmer herding his sheep and a stately galleon in a southeast view of London in 1550. These beautiful engravings are remarkable for their quality and enhanced greatly by the soft colour tinting process. 112pp, 9" x 12".
