KANDINSKY

HAJO DUCHTING    Book Number: 82921    Product format: Hardback

Wassily Kandinsky's boldly colourful, geometric pop art paintings are amongst the most easily recognisable of modern art works. His distinctive busy creations featuring geometric shapes and lines in vivid colour are fun and intriguing. Originally destined for an academic career, two events thwarted this, 'firstly, in the exhibition of French art in Moscow he was overwhelmed by one of Monet's haystack pictures, because he recognised that the visual effect of the painting was independent of the object portrayed. His second experience was prompted by a visit to the opera where he saw Wagner's Lohengrin. 'I saw all my colours in spirit, before my eyes. Wild, almost crazy lines were sketched in front of me. This concept of synaesthesia fascinated Kandinsky as an artist and led to his theory of sound and colour.' Born in Moscow in 1866 to a middle-class family, his talent for drawing and painting was encouraged, and later he moved to Munich, initially focusing on art nouveau. It is interesting to see, from the dozens of paintings shown here, how his style evolved throughout his career, with some of the works being amazingly complex. After another spell in Russia, he returned to Germany and in 1922 took up an offer from Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus Weimar to head the mural workshop. Kandinsky's intricate, stunning, colourful paintings enliven the senses, and you discover something new each time you turn the pages to study the images. Lovely Könemann publication, 288pp. Colour illus.
