GREAT WAR BRITAIN: The First World War At Home

LUCINDA GOSLING    Book Number: 82740    Product format: Hardback

Popular magazines such as The Tatler, The Sketch and The Queen recorded the national preoccupations following a declaration of war in August 1914 which was to change Britain and British society irrevocably as conflict came to dominate almost every aspect of civilian life for the next four years. The magazines recorded the national preoccupations and in particular, the upper-class experience of war. Targeted at a well-heeled, largely female audience, these magazines were veteran reporters of aristocratic balls, the latest Parisian fashions and society engagements, but quickly adapted to war-like conditions without ever losing their gossipy essence. Fashion found itself jostling with items on patriotic fundraising, and Court presentations were replaced by notes on nursing convalescent soldiers. Includes adverts for Glaxo baby food, Decca portable gramophones, pictures of garden party picnics, court reports, the beautiful young Princess Mary who trained as a nurse at Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital, a colour reproduction of a 'Blinded for You' charity postcard, a postcard of a heart-warming scene of a family reunion, recruitment posters, the benefits of Harrogate Spa, 'Beauty on duty has a duty to beauty' for cosmetics and creams, Kirchner Girls, Don't Waste Bread! poster, advert for military-badged jewellery to be worn by women and set with precious stones, Georges Barbier fashion plates, and the magnificent Hotel Cecil on the Strand, which in 1918 became a headquarters of the newly formed RAF. Superb social history, beautifully told by an expert historian who has made use in her research on royalty, costume, illustration and more for this at times amusing and slightly feminine perspective of life on the home front. 240 very large pages, colour and b/w images and plates.
