JOHN LENNON LETTERS

EDITED BY HUNTER DAVIES    Book Number: 82699    Product format: Paperback

One of the world's greatest-ever songwriters and one of the most famous people of the 20th century, John Lennon's musical gifts and what he packed into his 40 year life are the stuff of modern legend. Well-known journalist, biographer and author Hunter Davies is the author of the only authorised Beatles biography and, during his research for that book and subsequent ferreting in the Lennon archive and chatting to friends, fans, family, business acquaintances and plenty more besides, he tracked down 285 of Lennon's letters, jottings and postcards. Here they are: letters to all kinds of people, from lovers to the laundryman and best friends to bitter enemies. They are by turns tender, informative, funny, angry, abusive, reconciliatory and heart-breaking, ranging in time from his earliest surviving thank-you note, written when he was ten, to the scribbled autograph he wrote for Ribeah Love, the switchboard operator at the Record Plant studios, on 8 December 1980 as he left the building at 10.10pm - 20 minutes later, he was shot dead. Arguably the most interesting are those between John and Paul McCartney as the winding up of the Beatles and Apple, coinciding with the pair of them making new solo careers and lives, sees what started off fairly amicable (they were childhood friends after all) descend into vitriol and spite. In truth both men were probably badly let down by legal people, accountants and self-interested types, and the reader can sense, even during his foulest written tirades, some tangible tenderness from John toward Paul. John loved a bit of wordplay and in this collection we find some of the most charming examples. Very well illus. with b/w photos, drawings etc, 386pp paperback.
