SERMON ON THE MOUNT ILLUSTRATED

BOSTON ROBERTS BROTHERS    Book Number: 82043    Product format: Hardback

A facsimile of an edition of 1890, this beautiful book is red cloth-bound with gilded edges and illustrates the text of Jesus's "Sermon on the Mount" from the Gospel of Matthew. A comprehensive expression of Christian moral teaching, it incorporates the principle that humble people will be raised above the rich and the proud in God's kingdom. "Blessed are they that mourn... blessed are they which are persecuted." The language of the King James Bible is well matched by the archaic lettering and the black and white engravings that accompany each page of text. When giving to the poor, "let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth": an illustration shows a turbaned young man handing a coin to a beggar while pointing out to his companion something on the other side of the street. The words of the Lord's Prayer are included in this selection, beautifully decorated with a surround reminiscent of a jewelled prayer book or missal. The rejection of money is central to Jesus's teaching: "Ye cannot serve God and mammon", and it is important not to worry too much about the future: "Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof". Exceptional illustrations. No page numbers, but about 50 thick sheets of high quality paper with gilt edges. First time discounted.
