MINIATURES IN THE WALLACE COLLECTION

STEPHEN DUFFY & C. M. VOGTHERR    Book Number: 81953    Product format: Hardback

70 beautiful miniatures are magnified for us to inspect in close up detail such as the very striking Lady Hamilton as a Bacchante 1803 by Henry Bone and Richard Cosway's ivory portrait of his wife Maria. The miniatures considered are in broadly chronological order and this group of over 330 works formed part of the generous bequest to the British nation made by Lady Wallace in 1897. It includes by far the best group of French miniatures in Britain as well as fine examples of English miniature painting and works from other schools. Enjoy these exquisite small paintings in watercolour or enamel, generally made for private contemplation and one of the most popular mediums of portraiture in an age before the advent of photography. Still of huge interest and collectability today, among our other favourites are the rosy cheeked children like Lady Gertrude Fitzpatrick, nobility like the Empress Josephine by Aubry, and Mme de Staël by Arlaud-Jurine. 184 large 9½" x 11" pages in softback.
