JOEL FINLER    Book Number: 81949    Product format: Hardback

A former actor himself, director Elia Kazan is shown in a superb series of black and white stills on set, reflecting his remarkable collaboration with such young actors as Marlon Brando on A Streetcar Named Desire or the youthful Stathis Giallelis. 16 years before My Fair Lady, Cecil Beaton was hired by the producer-director Alexander Korda to collaborate on the set and costume designs for his production of Oscar Wilde's 'An Ideal Husband'. We see him caught in action with his favourite Rolleiflex on page 191. Here are fantastic examples of movie fight sequences, Bette Davis looking virtually unrecognisable without make up in a shot taken at home in the 1940s, glamorous Hollywood weddings, home life in mansions, the studio hairdressing department with Audrey Hepburn about to have her hair cut on camera in Roman Holiday, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor rehearsing the important banquet scene for the 1963 production of Cleopatra with director Joseph L. Mankiewicz, Howard Hawks chatting with Carole Lombard and John Barrymore at Columbia Studio 1934, Cary Grant and Randolph Scott who shared a house in the early 30s among a great number of interesting shots of lead actors as they are seen rehearsing, not bothered that the stills photographer is recording some unusual background details. Very rare, much uncredited material is reproduced plus hundreds of Paramount star and other Hollywood glam shots and picture spreads. Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Marilyn Monroe, still images are so powerful they can easily pass for actual scenes from the movies they represent rather than separately posed, lighted and photographed shots that may not even find their way into the finished film. The book is the most detailed and perceptive survey ever devoted to this neglected aspect of filmmaking, charting the rise of giant studios in the 1930s to their eventual decline, focussing on many key films and filmmakers. Hundreds of rare stills presented on 224 large 8½" x 11" glossy pages in this 2012 revised edition.
