COLLINS FIELD GUIDE BIRDS OF SOUTH AMERICA

BER VAN PERLO    Book Number: 81881    Product format: Hardback

This is one of the books in the excellent Collins Field Guide series, so you know what to expect before opening the cover; there will be clear concise text and stunning images. Hundreds of brightly-coloured birds, covering the passerines from Sapayoa to Finches, are depicted against a white background to make identification easier. Tanagers, manakins, cock-of-the rocks, spinetails, jays and grosbeaks - this part of the world, South America, has long been renowned for the beauty and variety of its flora and fauna. The book covers all 1,952 passerine species south of Panama, with illustrations of each bird and additional images of female and juvenile plumage if necessary. The initial pages have diagrams explaining the various parts of a bird and describe each of the 32 families, such as the Hirundinidae (swallows) and the Mimidae (mockingbirds). There is also an interesting explanation of the build of the syrinx (song organ) in passerines. The clear, concise text is opposite each picture to enable a birder in the field to quickly find the relevant information, and it gives information on the size, habitat, call notes and song. A distribution map for each bird not only shows whereabouts it can be found, it also indicates how common (or rare) it is, whether resident, boreal migrant, austral species or vagrant, to aid identification even more. The author was also responsible for the exquisite illustrations that adorn the 195 colour plates, many of which he worked while referring to skins from the Tring Natural History Museum. He states 'Visiting any American country is...a real event for a European birder, because any native bird he or she sees after leaving the plane will be a lifer.' Includes distribution maps and key identification features, and fits neatly into a rucksack. 464pp. Colour illus.
