DELICATE PREY AND OTHER STORIES

PAUL BOWLES     Book Number: 81762    Product format: Paperback

Bowles was born in 1910 and studied music with composer Aaron Copland before moving to Tangier in Morocco. A devastatingly imaginative observer of the West's encounter with the East, he is the author of four novels including 'The Sheltering Sky' and one of the most powerful post-war American novelists, travel writer, poet and translator who died in 1999. This is his first short story collection, a variety of detective stories such as 'A Distant Episode' and 'How Many Midnights' in which Bowles pushes human character beyond socially defying limits, mapping a transformed, often horribly so, reality. He captures the duality of human frailty and cruelty in these 17 taut and atmospheric tales written between 1939 and 1949. Brutal and gorgeous, visceral and profound, his language has a purity of line, a poised and authority entirely its own. Paul Bowles "Opened the world of Hip and let in the murder, drugs, incest, death and the call of the orgy, and the end of civilisation", said Norman Mailer. US imported paperback, 300 roughcut pages, illus. 'The Delicate Prey' was first published in 1945. Remainder mark.
