PRIVATE MEMOIRS AND CONFESSIONS OF A JUSTIFIED SINNER

Book number: 24276 Product format: Paperback Author: JAMES HOGG

In stock

£2.50

With an Introduction and Notes by David Blair, University of Kent at Canterbury. In the early years of the 18th century, Scotland is torn by religious and political strife. Hogg's sinner, justified by his Calvinist conviction that his own salvation is pre-ordained, is suspected of involvement in a series of bizarre and hideous crimes. A century later his memoirs reveal the extraordinary, macabre truth. The tale is chilling for its astute psychological accuracy as it illustrates, with power and economy, the dire effect of self-righteous bigotry on a fanatical character. 224 pages, paperback.

COLLECTED TALES AND POEMS OF EDGAR ALLAN POE

Book number: 46363 Product format: Paperback Author: EDGAR ALLAN POE

In stock

£10.00

Contains 'Tales of Mystery and Imagination' including The Fall of the House of Usher and The Premature Burial, 'Tales of Humour and Satire' including Loss of Breath, The Sphinx and Never Bet the Devil Your Head, 'Flights of Fancy' including King Pest and Von Kempelen and His Discovery, on page 787 the Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket and 'Miscellaneous Poems' including The Raven, A Valentine, Hymn, The Colosseum, To My Mother, Bridal Ballad, For Annie, Evening Star and Fairy-Land. With 20 atmospheric silhouette illustrations, a monumental 1038 page new paperback from Wordsworth. Poe was born the son of itinerant actors on January 19th, 1809 in Boston, Massachusets. In 1836 he married his cousin Virginia but despite his prolific activities - journalism, poetry, lecturing, short stories, publishing, criticism and experimentation with fictional genres, including the detective novel which he virtually invented with the publication of 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue' (1841) - he received scant recognition for his efforts until the publication of 'The Raven' in 1845. The poem's instant popularity gave him a new visibility in literary circles, but his personal situation remained desperate: poverty, illness, drink, and the physical decline and ultimate death of Virginia in 1847 led to his untimely and premature decline. He died at the age of 40. Paperback, 1038 pages.

PERRAULT'S FAIRY TALES

Book number: 46623 Product format: Paperback Author: TRANLATED BY A. E. JOHNSON

In stock

£2.50

Eight of the twelve tales in this book are from the master hand of Charles Perrault (1628-1703). It is true to say that as long as there are children to listen spellbound to the adventures of 'Cinderella', 'Red Riding Hood', and that arch rogue 'Puss in Boots', his memory will endure. Three of the tales, 'The Ridiculous Wishes', 'Donkey-Skin' and 'Patient Griselda', are seldom included in Perrault collections as they were written in a very florid verse form. Not only Perrault, but Boccaccio, Chaucer and others have used the story of 'Patient Griselda'. The last story's 'Beauty and the Beast'. 144 page paperback.

Millions of people around the world are healing illnesses with cannabis yet nonetheless many doctors remain reluctant to discuss cannabis medicine with their patients. There is much conflicting misinformation from unreliable sources, so finding out if cannabis can be an effective treatment can feel nearly impossible. Dr Bonni Goldstein has helped thousands of patients suffering from chronic, difficult-to-treat conditions improved with cannabis. WAKE UP

Book number: 90312 Product format: Hardback Author: PIERS MORGAN

In stock

£7.50

Love him or loath him, the journalist Piers Morgan shouts loud a rallying cry for a united future to consider what really matters in life. It's time to get back some common sense, time to cancel the cancel culture. If you think NHS heroes and Captain Sir Tom Moore are the real stars of our society, not the self-obsessed, tone-deaf celebrities and royal renegades, then this is the book for you. Piers Morgan is sickened by the cancel-culture bullies, destroying people's careers and lives and from feminism to masculinity, racism to gender, body image to veganism, mental health to competitiveness at school, the right to free speech and expressing an honestly held opinion he believes are being crushed at the altar of 'woke' political correctness. COVID-19 shed shocking light on the problems that plague our country. Stockpilers and lockdown cheats revealed our grotesque levels of self-interest. Millennials flocked to parks for picnics, proving the rank hypocrisy of the supposedly 'socially conscious'. The virtue-signalling woke brigade continued their furious assault on free speech, shutting down debate on important issues like gender, racism and feminism. The global pandemic has exposed in the UK deep divisions within society and laid bare a toxic culture war and here Morgan also holds the government to often ferocious account over its handling of the crisis. Yet he also on balance sees that Coronavirus has showcased our strengths, selfless bravery in the heroic efforts of our healthcare staff, a greater appreciation of migrant workers, the return of local community spirit and inspiring, noble acts from members of the public. From Wuhan to PPE, Harry and Meghan and Black Lives Matter and attacks on statues, Boris and Donald, here is a book of January to July. Morgan has strong opinions and is utterly truthful in where he points his aim.

ESSAY CONCERNING HUMAN UNDERSTANDING

Book number: 30592 Product format: Paperback Author: LOCKE

In stock

£3.50

John Locke (1632-1704) was a key figure in 17th century philosophy, politics and society. An Essay Concerning Human Understanding was his greatest achievement, and encompasses a broad spectrum of his thought. In the Essay, Locke makes clear the critical and sceptical routes by which philosophy was to develop as a study distinct from the natural sciences, and he argues on views on society, religion, language, education and progress that have subsequently become widely influential in the mainstream of European thought. His political writings embody the spirit of the Revolution of 1688. Locke's natural modesty combines felicitously with his passionate concern for freedom, integrity and human happiness. His supremely intelligent and commonsense approach is as stimulating now as it was in the 17th century. 426pp. Paperback.

NO HANDCUFFS: The Final Word on My War with The Krays

Book number: 90300 Product format: Paperback Author: EDDIE RICHARDSON

In stock

£4.00

'On the day there were seven of Bill's boys all masked up and they snatched what in modern cash would be around eight million quid. They boxed in the PO van with two cars, took off with about 30 mail bags before the alarm went off, and stashed the money at a pre-arranged drop. It was as smooth as can be. There was hell to pay. Churchill was Prime Minister and was furious...' This was the unsolved 1952 'daylight' robbery. The last King of Gangland gives the final word on his war with the Krays. Eddie Richardson is the last brand-name gangster, one of the few survivors from a vanished world of violent criminality. The Richardson brothers Eddie and Charlie, and their famous 'Torture Gang' made money, while their rivals Ronnie and Reggie Kray made fatal mischief. They fought each other, but Eddie also had to contend with his older brother - 'Charlie was evil.' Now his brother is dead, Eddie is free to tell the story of a vicious family feud and a life lived on the frontiers of the law. Eddie's comrade-in-arms was 'Mad' Frankie Fraser. Eddie reflects on his journey from the scrapyards of South London to the glitz and glamour of West End nightclubs, to the flesh and tease of Soho, through the door of No.10 to the perils of espionage and international intrigue, and finally as an inmate of a high-security prison, but with a personal fridge well stocked with gourmet food. 292pp, paperback, photos.
