Rattle of Bones, The Horror from the Mound, Skull-Face, Graveyard Rats, Wolfshead, The Thing on the Roof, Sea Curse, The Cairn of the Headland, The Fearsome Touch of Death and Dig Me No Grave are among the 17 Gothic short stories in this collection. Ranging from horror to supernatural terrors and chilling tales of insanity and death, these stories reveal the extraordinary talent and range of one of short fiction's most accomplished writers. Robert Ervin Howard (1906-1936) was one of the founders of the sword and sorcery genre and an influential figure in fantasy fiction. He created a range of iconic characters including Conan the Barbarian, the sombre Solomon Kane and the loveable sailor Steve Costigan, yet he was an accomplished horror writer and close confidante of H. P. Lovecraft and his stories have enthralled and chilled readers for generations. Much of his childhood was spent travelling through the small towns of Texas and absorbing the culture of a growing society. Here is a disconcerting werewolf tale, the Wild West to Medieval France and to the fantastical setting of Hyperborea and other fantasy landscapes. 382pp in new full price paperback.

NANA

Book number: 94143 Product format: Paperback Author: EMILE ZOLA

Bibliophile price £6.99

Born in April 1840, Emile Zola was a political journalist and outspoken critic of Emperor Napoleon III. A prolific author of famous works of history, Nana (1880) was the ninth novel in a series which follows a girl from the streets of Paris as she begins her meteoric rise to stardom. Using her sexuality as a weapon, she brings ruin to many of the men who pursue her in a stunning portrait of the decadence and corruption of late 19th century France. Extremely controversial at the time, Nana was nonetheless a great commercial success. Zola died in September 1902 from carbon monoxide poisoning. 428pp in new full price paperback.

33 short stories by Lafcadio Hearn, born 1850 in Levkás, Greece, who moved to Ireland when he was only two years old. In 1869, he emigrated to the US and his stories found appeal in national magazines like Harper's Weekly. Accepting a commission to visit Japan as a correspondent, he married a Japanese woman and became an ardent supporter of traditional Japanese practices, learning the language and adopting traditional dress and preserving the legends and stories of ancient Japan from the onslaught of modernisation and economic progress. He recorded the folklore of the local population in the form of short stories written in English and these are some of his most powerful works, bringing to life the magic and mystery of the East. This anthology includes a selection of his Japanese ghost stories including such favourites as Ingwa-Banashi, The Corpse-Rider, The Mirror Maiden, A Passional Karma, The Goblin-Spider, Of a Promise Broken, and Jikininki among them. The ghoulish beings range from spectral brides to vengeful phantoms and unruly goblins as Hearn creates a series of unforgettable tales and forgotten worlds. 191pp in new full price paperback.

MICK ROCK. THE RISE OF DAVID BOWIE 1972-1973

Bibliophile price £50.00

A unique tribute from David Bowie's official photographer and creative partner, Mick Rock, compiled in 2015, with Bowie's blessing. In 1972, David Bowie released his groundbreaking album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. With it landed Bowie's Stardust alter ego: a glitter-clad, mascara-eyed, sexually ambiguous persona who kicked down the boundaries between male and female, straight and gay, fact and fiction into one shifting and sparkling phenomenon of '70s self-expression. Together, Ziggy the album and Ziggy the stage spectacular propelled the softly spoken Londoner into one of the world's biggest stars. A key passenger on this glam trip into the stratosphere was fellow Londoner and photographer Mick Rock. Rock bonded with Bowie artistically and personally, immersed himself in the singer's inner circle, and, between 1972 and 1973, worked as the singer's photographer and videographer. This collection brings together spectacular stage shots, iconic photo shoots, as well as intimate backstage portraits. With a 5-phase lenticular cover of different headshots, it celebrates Bowie's fearless experimentation and reinvention, while offering privileged access to the many facets of his personality and fame. Through the aloof and approachable, the playful and serious, the candid and the contrived, the result is a passionate tribute to a brilliant and inspirational artist whose creative vision will never be forgotten. 23.8 x 33.3cm, 300 pages. Text in English, French and German. New from Taschen. The cover features a tipped-in A4 size five colour image that actually moves when tilted of Ziggy and faces of David Bowie. Could be removed from the front cover of the hardback book.

ANATOMY OF A MASSACRE:

Book number: 93890 Product format: Hardback Author: CHRISTIAN JENNINGS

Bibliophile price £6.50
Published price £20

At dawn on 12 August 1944, German SS troops arrived in the isolated Tuscan mountain village of Sant'Anna di Stazzema. On arrival, they proceeded to murder up to 560 Italian civilians in the olive groves and chestnut woods of the small hamlet in a savage reprisal operation. The victims were women, the elderly and over 80 children. One was a baby barely three weeks old. It was the most high-profile massacre committed by the Nazis in Italy and yet, despite three separate war crimes investigations, the Sant'Anna killers escaped justice. 60 years later, 10 of the SS men who were at Sant'Anna were sentenced to life imprisonment in absentia by Italian courts, but they died free men, protected by former SS colleagues working for the new Federal German government. Here is the full story of what happened at from Tuscany to Rome and Germany. Why were the survivors denied justice? With maps, rank structure of Waffen SS, we go back to a time of poor female migrant workers in the Po valley rice fields and the anti-Mussolini's Fascists songs like Bella Ciao. Illus, 288 pages.

AUSTRIAN REVOLUTION

Book number: 93896 Product format: Paperback Author: OTTO BAUER

In stock

Bibliophile price £7.00
Published price £24.99

Published in 1923, this book stands unique as an analysis of the Austrian revolution in Central Europe in 1918-21's internal dynamics and the costs of defeat. Today, as movements once again struggle with questions of reform or revolution, political strategy, and state power, this is a crucial resource. It is the story of the decline and fall of an empire, a region devastated by war, and a world stage fundamentally transformed by the Russian Revolution. Bauer's magisterial work - available in English for the first time in full - charts the evolution of three simultaneous, overlapping revolutionary waves: a national revolution for self-determination which brought down imperial Austro-Hungary; a bourgeois revolution for parliamentary republics and universal suffrage; and a social revolution for workers' control, factory councils, and industrial democracy. The brief but crowning achievement of Red Vienna, alongside Bauer's unique theorization of an integral socialism - an attempted synthesis of revolutionary communism and social democracy - is a vital part of the Left's intellectual and historical heritage. Bauer tells the story of the Austrian Revolution with all the immediacy of a central participant, and all the insight of a brilliant and original theorist. 'It is largely thanks to Otto Bauer's The Austrian Revolution that I discovered the richness of the Austro-Marxist tradition and the many affinities between the writings of Bauer and of our Gramsci, especially on the question of hegemony.' - Luciana Castellina, co-founder of Il Manifesto. The Austrian Revolution is one of the classics of Marxist political analysis comparable to Marx's Eighteenth Brumaire or Trotsky's History of the Russian Revolution. Well illus, heavyweight 400 page paperback.

FALLSCHIRMJAGER: German Paratroopers, 1942-1945:

Book number: 93917 Product format: Paperback Author: FRANCOIS COCHET

In stock

Bibliophile price £6.00
Published price £14.99

As elite troops, the German Fallschirmjäger (paratroopers) were regularly engaged in front line combat during the Second World War. Their famed actions such as the fighting in Scandinavia, the taking of the Belgian fortress Eden-Emal in May 1940, and the Battle for Crete just a year later, have given them the reputation of being determined, courageous and loyal soldiers. This book continues the pictorial history of the Fallschirmjäger, focusing on the period following the bloody Battle for Crete. Used as elite infantry, first in the USSR and then in Africa, the Fallschirmjäger were able to reconnect with their glorious past, whether in Italy or on the Greek Islands, as they jumped from their Ju 52s to engage the enemy. Their hard fighting in Italy helped to cement the legend of 'the Green Devils', with the British General Harold Alexander describing them as 'tenacious, highly-trained men, hardened by their many actions and combats'. However, during the fighting in Normandy, the Ardennes and on the Eastern Front, the number of veterans decreased, meaning it was the young German paratroopers who finally surrendered the III Reich on 8 May 1945. Chapters cover Reinforcements, Tunisia, Italy 1943, the Aegean Sea 1943, Fighting in the East 1943-44, Italy 1944, the Normandy Invasion 1944, the Netherlands and the Ardennes. Pen and Sword 144 page large very well illustrated paperback.
