V&A Pattern. Sanderson 1954 - 74

Sanderson fabrics have always impressed me by the beautiful designs and colours. I have been lucky to see them in hotels and at times I have copied the designs into my sketch book. Sadly I have never owned any Sanderson. So this book was irresisable for me. It shows a range of wall covering and furnishing fabric designs. The illustrations are extremely high quality and each is full page. The designs from the 50s show some limited colour schemes, some of which could be described as dull, which are applied well to the designs. As we move through the 60s and 70s the nature of designs moves from often sketchy representation to firmer, bolder and more distinctive patterns. Colour schemes become brighter and full of contrast or graded shading as the designer explores new possibilities. I am an amateur artist, so i use this book to explore colours and shapes in my printing, collage and design. I also simply enjoy exploring the illustrations, and in time, I may find out a little more about the designers.
