TALE OF PETER RABBIT (Holiday Edition)

Book number: 91670 Product format: Hardback Author: BEATRIX POTTER

In stock

£2.50

The much-loved character of Peter Rabbit originated with a Christmas Card, and this edition of the classic tale includes Christmas endpapers, as in the original version. The naughty Peter Rabbit has no intention of following his siblings Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail down the lane to gather blackberries. Before she goes out to buy currant buns, his mother warns them that on no account are they to go into their neighbour Mr McGregor's garden, because Mr McGregor has previously caught Mr Rabbit and put him into a pie. But Peter is unable to resist, gorging himself on lettuces, radishes and parsley, and when Mr McGregor spots him he hides in a watering can and other nooks and crannies in one of the great classic chases of literature, losing his shoes and jacket in the process. Back home, he is sent to bed with camomile tea, while Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail enjoy their blackberries with milk. Gorgeously illustrated with Potter's own inimitable watercolour drawings. 70pp.

OSBERT

Book number: 91903 Product format: Hardback Author: NOEL STREATFEILD

In stock

£2.00

First published in 1950 we have a lovely 2019 Scholastic facsimile reprint illustrated by Susanne Suba. 'It was the day before Aunt Cathy's wedding. Everything glistened and gleamed with excitement. Then the blow fell. Father said: 'We must get some neighbour to take Osbert tomorrow.' Osbert had been in the family since he was a month old. When first he had come to the house it had been thought that maybe he would develop into some kind of terrier. As he grew, it was discovered he was mostly black poodle whose hair had forgotten to curl. He was as much a part of the family as the children.' A vintage classic, the book is a charming time capsule for readers of any age. If the dog was too unsightly for the family wedding, the outraged children must work a miracle. Slim elegant hardback. Colour illus.

SORRY TALE OF FOX AND BEAR

Book number: 91910 Product format: Hardback Author: MARGRETE LAMOND & H. VALLANCE

In stock

£2.75

The exquisite line art and observation of nature in the pencil drawings of Heather Vallance drew us to this beautifully illustrated modern take on the trickster tale. 'Friendship is like a winding path and you never know what is round the next bend or where that path will lead you. This tale is about such a friendship full of twists and turns and a heartfelt letter to a friend.' Long ago, far from everywhere, someone once found a letter stuffed into a hollow log. It was a letter of pain and love and anger and regret. It was a letter to a friend.' 'We were friends, remember, when you were still around. True friends. Close-as-can-be friends... except for one thing. You were quick and slick and sly, and I was dumber than a pile of rocks. But that's how it was. And it didn't matter. Then you went and stretched the string of friendship until it snapped and we weren't friends anymore. And now you?re gone, and here instead are Hare and Rooster, greedy and grinning and pushing to be my new friend.' 'Fox was as mean as a spoonful of mustard,' Hare tells me.' The farmhouse, frozen ponds, drilling holes to go fishing together, a mouthful of wasps, the trickster is tricked... 'And I can't help wondering... where are you now?' Readers? eyes will be bulging and your whiskers trembling by the end of the moralistic tale injected with a fresh contemporary twist for modern audiences. With beautiful pagemarker, 60 very large pages and exquisite line art.

TRAVELS WITH MY GRANNY

Book number: 91913 Product format: Hardback Author: JULIET RIX & CHRISTOPHER CORR

In stock

£2.00

My Granny is a great traveller. When she was younger she travelled all over the world. To China, Russia, Egypt and Peru. She crossed rivers and mountain ranges, explored jungles and towering cities. Now her legs won't carry her much further than the door, but she still travels...and sometimes she takes me with her. Together they travel to Delhi, the capital of India with the Hindu god Ganesha which has the heads of an elephant. Tricycle taxis called rickshaws roam the streets. We've been to Rome where Ancient Romans came to the Colosseum to watch Gladiators fight. Italy is the home of ice cream and spaghetti. And Jerusalem...this city is 3,000 years old! We've been to London where 18 kings and queens are buried in Westminster Abbey and New York where the streets in the centre of the city are all in straight lines. The grown-ups say Granny is confused and doesn't know where she is. But I think she knows exactly where she is. It just isn't where the grown-ups are. We've sailed the Great Lakes and hiked the Himalayas. We've snorkelled the Great Barrier Reef and dined at the Eiffel Tower. Granny can't remember yesterday but she knows all about the world. A sensitive introduction to old age confusion and dementia through a loving and imaginative relation between Granny and her grandchild and their colourful journeys. Gentle and positive. A big picture book all in colour.

BOY WHO SPROUTED ANTLERS

Book number: 92054 Product format: Hardback Author: JOHN YEOMAN & QUENTIN BLAKE

In stock

£4.25

A companion to A Drink of Water code 92063, this 1961 classic is vividly illustrated with Quentin Blake's inimitable drawings, nine in colour and ten in black and white. It is nearly the summer holidays, and Billy Dexter and his classmates are trying to finish their wicker baskets. Their craft teacher Miss Beddows is so appalled by Billy's efforts that she keeps him in after class for a pep talk. 'As long as you set your mind on something and try hard enough, there's nothing you can't do.' Billy loves the idea that he can do anything, but his friends Melanie and Paul don't agree. 'What about growing horns?' suggests Melanie. It is a challenge Billy has to accept. 'When the children return to school after the summer holidays Billy was his normal self again and seemed, if anything, more cheerful and harder working than in the days before he grew the antlers.' A wonderful fantasy tale observed from the reality of school life, long hot summer holidays and children's imaginations and friendship. 48pp, illus.
