It is estimated that by the age of 50, one in two women and one in five men have broken a bone as a result of osteoporosis. There are even suggestions for hip protectors to cushion you if you have a fall, poor balance (exercises page 83 and 103), poor eyesight and hearing, dizziness, medication, footwear, slippery surfaces, steep stairs, poor lighting and cold houses, clutter and trailing wires, icy and dark weather. Know the risk factors and make changes, understand better hormones, ethnicity, blood type and body-fat levels, medication and medical conditions, and as you go reward the changes you make for short-term motivation. As we get older our bones become less dense and more prone to breaks and fractures and the condition is known as osteoporosis or 'brittle bone disease'. The good news is that it is possible to slow down the development of the disease whether you are at risk or already have been diagnosed, with a combination of exercise and healthy lifestyle choices. This will strengthen your bones and help you stay independent for longer. Exercise safely and at the right level and there even is included a range of seated and standing exercises, step-by-step instructions and clear illustrations. For standing in balance for example there is a calf raise, rhomboid squeeze between your shoulder blade, an upright rowing motion with cans of baked beans, bicep curls, and some of the exercises you can do as you walk around the park so you are nicely warmed up. Standing stretches for your hamstrings, quadriceps, calf, triceps, chest and there?s a cardiovascular workout which includes side steps and claps, leg curls, knee lifts with a twist, side squats like a plié of a ballet dancer, leg kicks like calf raising, standing behind a sturdy chair with your hands on the back of it and raising onto your toes, repeating 8-12 times. Lovely clear modern layout, 116pp in softback, colour photos.

FROM A DARK PLACE

Book number: 92281 Product format: Paperback Author: TONY HUSBAND & PAUL HUSBAND

In stock

Bibliophile price £2.50
Published price £8.99

'How A Family Coped With Drug Addiction' is the sub-title of our dear friend the famous cartoonist Tony Husband's second book, a companion to Take Care, Son code 92287. This time Tony turns his attention to his own son Paul, struggling with drug addiction, and how it can be handled with incredible gentleness, grace and honesty. The father and son team simply tell it how it is and Tony's fine drawings are of himself and Paul who thankfully is clean today and has two beautiful daughters, the youngest of whom Daisy is a fine illustrator already under her grandfather's tutelage. The bright, happy, carefree little boy excelled in sport, loved music, but his spirit and confidence were broken when the bullying at school began. Then he started drinking and messing with drugs, needing somewhere to hide. Depression, self-harming, drink, drugs - by 21 Paul was using heroin. Stealing and borrowing money from his family, his room was a tip and Paul sunk to smoking heroin in a public toilet and never got his stuff back out of the pawn shop. After a police caution, prescriptions, he was then injecting crack, flirting with death and he knew it. He finally asked his Dad for help and in rehabilitation knew he was ravaged, destroyed with fear and guilt; detox was hard and every joint screamed in pain. Nine months later and out, he slipped back into his old ways and OD'd: 'The LUF group were amazing. I felt I was part of a movement. No one judged me because they were all in the same boat. Their love and energy was infectious.' Today Paul is a successful photographer. Another uplifting and helpful book from dear Tony with his poignant cartoon colour illustrations throughout. 60 pages, softback, ALL COPIES SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR AND HIS SON, PAUL.

Bibliophile price £4.00
Published price £8.99

The Sunday Times Bestseller is sub-titled 'A Survivor's Guide to the Menopause' and is an hilarious and refreshingly honest compendium from C for Carb-loading and G for Getting Your Shit Together, to I for Invisibility and V for Vaginas. Jenny's whistlestop tour of 'The Change' in all its glory will make you realise that it really isn't just you. She will share the surprising lessons she has learned along the way as well as her hard-won tips on the joy of cardigans, dealing with the empty nest (get a lodger) and keeping the lid on the pressure cooker of your temper (count to 20, ten is never enough). 'The trouble with overheating in bed and ripping off your nightie is that your partner thinks it's a sexy come-on...' This is a book written from experience and from the heart which will make you laugh and feel better because a problem shared after all is a problem halved, and as women age, nowadays the fairer sex are no longer content to boil silently and uncomplainingly in the corner. ?As long as there has been life on earth, then, there have been menopausal women, stomping about, feeling furious, giving the old man grief for bringing home some scraggy bit of flea-bitten mammoth and complaining about 'the bloody fire being too hot'?. The Grumpy Old Woman speaks, and very funny she is too. 295pp, paperback.

PHYSICAL TRAINING SIMPLIFIED

Book number: 92477 Product format: Hardback Author: EDWARD WARMAN

In stock

Bibliophile price £4.00
Published price £7.99

A British Library reprint of a physical fitness manual from the Edwardian Age which is both refreshingly practical and amusingly eccentric. 'The exercises herewith given are so arranged as to meet the needs of the young, the middle-aged, and the aged of both sexes. One is never too old to reap some benefit. The system is complete in itself as it brings into healthful action every joint and every muscle of the body, and all this without the use of apparatus. It will give strength, health and confidence.' Beginning with how to stand, the correct carriage of the body and how to retain it: 'Carry your heart high is metaphorical; but to carry your stomach high is practical.' Stand against the wall, first touching the heels, then as much of the body as possible, drawing back the head to the wall, with the chin slightly drawn in. You will observe that the chest is expanded and in a firm position muscularly, thereby enabling you to retain the chest position independently of the breath.' How to walk, sit, rest, sleeping at will, self-magnetising, active chest, breathing through the diaphragm and abdomen, costal, dorsal and belt breathing, the shoulder brace, and the freedom of the joints of the fingers, wrists, elbows, shoulders, neck with very careful twists and gentle turns and a word about muscles, thighs, and elasticity of one's step, there are suggestions for gentle exercises using the back of a chair and how many repetitions. Devoted to the sedentary workforce, dynamic good health is the aim, not giant muscles, and much attention is given to the crucial abilities of relaxation, flexibility and good breathing as well as specific instructions for strengthening of the arms, legs, hips and shoulders. 74pp, line art.

STOP WRINKLES THE EASY WAY

Book number: 92491 Product format: Paperback Author: DR MIKE DILKES AND A. ADAMS

Bibliophile price £1.75
Published price £6.99

First they debunked the myth that snoring is hard to kick and saved thousands of people from noisy, sleepless nights. Now the duo of Dr Mike Dilkes a Harley Street ENT surgeon and Alex Adams, a clinical expert with Glaxosmithkline, are back and this time with a reliable, no-nonsense book on how to best care for your skin and slow the effects of ageing. We are now investing more time and money than ever in the pursuit of health, happiness, beauty and longevity and unprecedented numbers of men and women in their 30s are 'going under the knife' to thwart unwelcome crinkles, crow's feet and laughter lines. But invasive surgery is NOT the only way to start loving a more youthful reflection. The book covers the basics of collagen and elastin, shows figures and diagrams of the dermis, explains what wrinkles are and the effects of environmental factors like sun exposure, smoking, alcohol, low air humidity together with pressure memory from sleeping positions. Worry and frown lines, smile lines, nasolabial lines, jaw line and jowls, the neck and the chest, now we begin to understand what wrinkles are and how and why they appear. Next it is important to outline the different skin types, male versus female and the daily 2s. Two litres of water, two portions of good bacteria and collagen, two applications of SPF30 face cream, two minutes facial cleansing and off to sleep - sleep hygiene and quality. Avoid stimulants, high calorie meals or strenuous exercise just before bed, maximise your exposure to natural light, don't nap in the day even if you're tired, and turn off all electronic devices at least one hour before bedtime. And finally giving blood is pumping iron for real, community minded and great for your body. 86 page paperback, diagrams.
