STAR TREK EPIC EPISODES

Book number: 93170 Product format: Paperback Author: EDITED BY NICK JONES

Bibliophile price £8.00
Published price £21.99

Packed with colour stills and other images, here are the most epic episodes from the original series and Star Trek: The Next Generation. A big glossy softback Titan publication in which interviews were originally printed in Star Trek Magazine, some of which date back almost 20 years. Where no man has gone before, we speed through space and recollect the Doomsday Machine, Operation Annihilate, Three is A Magic Number: Kirk, Spock, McCoy. There is a Gene L. Coon tribute, a Khan Noonien Singh profile, a look at Kirk and Picard, the making of The Next Generation, and interviews with Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner, D. C. Fontana, Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner and other luminaries. The collection explores such classics as 'Space Seed', 'The City on the Edge of Forever', 'Yesterday's Enterprise', and 'When the Cast Gets Naked', of which the cast had a low opinion of the episode. Captain Kirk finds true love in 'The Paradise Syndrome', one of the most heart-breaking voyages of the original Enterprise which provides an interesting twist on Hodgkin's theory as an outside influence actively moves an entire culture to another world without its knowledge. The mission seems simple enough - use the Enterprise's deflector beam to save a Class-M planet from an approaching asteroid. But on the planet they discover a village impossibly populated by a tribe of Native Americans from Earth. Recall dozens of classic episodes and images from both generations in this beautifully produced big album of 176 pages. Extra large sized softback, glossy colour images.

WHERE'S MY GUITAR?

Book number: 93176 Product format: Paperback Author: BERNIE MARSDEN

In stock

Bibliophile price £4.00
Published price £9.99

A fascinating insight into the golden age of 1970s and 80s rock 'n' roll told through the eyes of music legend Bernie Marsden and most notably his role in establishing one of the world's most famous rock bands of all time - Whitesnake. Touring with AC/DC, befriending The Beatles, writing one of the world's most iconic rock songs, this is the story of a young boy from a small town who dreamt one day of playing the guitar for a living and ended up a rock legend. Bernie's astonishing career in the industry includes tours in Cold War Germany and Franco's Spain to meeting and befriending George Harrison and touring Europe with AC/DC. It's a story of hard graft, of life on the road, and meeting and playing with your heroes, of writing the multi-million selling hit 'Here I Go Again' and, at the age of 30, Bernie leaving Whitesnake due to serious conflict with his management. This is something he explores in this memoir for the very first time. Packed with stories and encounters with the likes of Ringo Starr, Elton John, Cozy Powell, Ozzy Osbourne, B.B. King and Jon Lord, we drift back to a time and a place we won't ever get back again. The glorious David Coverdale writes in 2019 in his Introduction, 'Bernie quite boldly suggested himself for the band I was putting together after Deep Purple. He immediately established himself by playing and singing great, and bringing his excellent sense of derisive humour to the mix, which was a huge part of early Whitesnake... and our choruses inspired the creation of the Almighty Whitesnake Choir - ah, sweet memories. Bernie was truly an invaluable band-mate, friend, musician and co-composer of many of my favourite Whitesnake songs, particularly 'Walking in the Shadow of the Blues' and 'Here I Go Again'.' 274 page paperback with many colour and archive photos.

FATHER OF THE MODERN CIRCUS: Billy Buttons

Book number: 93434 Product format: Paperback Author: STEVE WARD

In stock

Bibliophile price £3.00
Published price £12.99

The circus is a very British institution, and its imagery is everywhere from brightly coloured circus posters to advertising motifs, seen in films, toys and games and in our language - juggling the finances, walking a fine wire, clowning around, and putting one's head into the lion's jaw. The brightly coloured big top and razzmatazz are very much an American import. The whole world of the circus has a long and colourful history, but it was with a man named Philip Astley that the 'modern' circus was founded, 250 years ago plus, in April 1768. He pegged out a circular ride on the banks of the River Thames and gave performances of trick riding to a paying audience. An accomplished horseman, military hero and instinctive showman, above all Astley was an entrepreneur who realised that people would pay good money to be entertained and entertained well. He created the comic character of Billy Buttons and other acts were added to his performances - clowns, rope dancers, tumblers and strongmen. The book goes back to his early days as an apprentice cabinetmaker and his military exploits in the 15th Dragoons, to his trials and tribulations of establishing himself as a respected performer and his international successes in France and Ireland. He truly was a larger-than-life figure. Includes quotes from newspapers and letters of the time. 126pp, paperback.

MORNING GLORY ON THE VINE

Book number: 92354 Product format: Hardback Author: JONI MITCHELL

In stock

Bibliophile price £16.50
Published price £30

The Canadian songwriter Joni Mitchell produced her ground-breaking album Blue in 1971. It emerged as a singular commercial and critical success around the world and at the time the artist herself puzzled herself over what to give her friends that Christmas. The result was a handmade book with only 100 copies produced, filled with her own handwritten lyrics and reproductions of her many stunning drawings - portraits, abstracts, random concert goers, a road trip psychedelic dream sequence, a very detailed peacock feathered line art princess and Ottoman style palace line drawing, a pensive self-portrait, an aeroplane engine seen just in the fuselage in black and white under a bright zigzag yellow thunderstorm facing a page with the poem 'A Plane is a Bird' dated 28th May 1969. It is all written in her beautiful cursive handwriting, faithfully reproduced in facsimile in this 2019 first edition published by Canongate Books. The album is a better way of understanding what Joni Mitchell found beautiful and worth holding on to, and the lyrics are from her first five albums as well as some unreleased songs, reminding us of what a stunning lyricist and poet she is. In her own words 'This collection of poems and songs and drawings is for myself and for my friends and loves who are this book.' There is a poem about Woodstock, Temptation, and of course the famous Big Yellow Taxi and Let the Wind Carry Me among the 60 lyrics and poems reproduced very neatly with absolutely no crossings out in her own handwriting. Furthermore there are stunning portraits of friends like Jane Lurie in bold psychedelic colours, Judy Collins, Graham Nash, James Taylor, David Crosby, the cover of Court and Spark, Georgia O'Keefe and Neil Young among the 34 full page colour plates. A beautiful big 128 page first edition, 23 x 28.5cm.

CARRY ON... EVERY MOVIE, EVERY STAR

Book number: 93277 Product format: Paperback Author: STEPHEN LAMBE

In stock

Bibliophile price £7.50
Published price £14.99

As much a part of British culture as warm beer and fish and chips, the Carry On films were hugely popular at the box office and have now become cult films, beloved by some, scorned by just as many. Sex, home life, drunkenness, toilet humour, working class snobbery, busty young women and lecherous middle aged men, much of the human slapstick of Carry On owed a debt to children's comics like The Beano and The Dandy. The publication of the first issue of Viz in 1979, the year after the Carry On series ended for the first time, is no coincidence and they raised the profanity level. The team's first scribe Norman Hudis came from a play and screenwriting background and this is reflected in the gentle, relatively naturalistic style of the early Carry On films. Talbot Rothwell was a man with great experience writing comedy for stage, television and radio and his clients included Arthur Askey and Terry Thomas. Beginning with Carry on Cabbie in 1963 and ending with Carry on Camping in 1969, we recall with great mirth Carry on Doctor, Carry on Screaming, Carry on Follow That Camel, Carry on Sergeant, Carry on Nurse. For nearly all 31 Carry on films there are almost exhaustive cast lists and stats like distribution and production, filming dates, UK release, running time and budget, guest actors and memories galore as Sid James, Barbara Winsor, Kenneth Williams, Joan Sims, Jim Dale and Charles Hawtrey strut among the superb repertory company. 128 page paperback reference, 32 colour illustrations.

TIL WRONG FEELS RIGHT: Lyrics and More

Book number: 93504 Product format: Hardback Author: IGGY POP

In stock

Bibliophile price £6.50
Published price $35

Iggy Pop with his trademark bare torso has been a constant presence on the rock scene since the late sixties, suffering an eclipse on the first break-up of The Stooges, being rescued by a productive touring and writing partnership with David Bowie, and in the 21st century going on the achieve widespread acclaim. This attractively produced collection of Iggy's lyrics has an "in yer face" vibe that never quite gets out of hand, backed up by some superb archive and recent photography and cutting edge design work. "1969" is "another year with nothing to do", accompanied by a shot of the soulful 21-year-old Iggy charming his audience. Glen Craig, the photographer, recalls Iggy working in a record store in Ann Arbor while working on his first proto-metal album, and "Not right", "Real Cool Time" and "Little Doll" all date from the same productive year. By 1970 Iggy was a radiant blonde, and songs such as "She got a TV eye on me" have a more personal focus, while "Search and Destroy" of 1973 expresses the urgency of the times in "Ain't got time to make no apology, soul radiation in the dead of night". That same year Bowie describes being introduced to "this funny ragged, ragged little guy with broken teeth" by Lou Reed who said, "Don't talk to him, he's a junkie". Iggy is pictured looking mournful and sitting on a bench with Bowie who wears flat cap, check shirt and turned-up jeans. A few pages later Steve Emberton's action photo is the only one he took of Iggy, but still many people's favourite, capturing the extraordinary physicality of the still-young performer. "The Passenger" has an urban theme that "sees the city's ripped backsides, sees the winding ocean drive", anticipating Pop's later city lyrics, eg "Mixin' the colors" of 1993: "If you leave the hate alone tonight, Music's gonna get you home tonight", or the chilling "Little Electric Chair". The lyrics are raw and the photos magnificent in this tremendous tribute compilation. 285pp, black and white and colour photos, almost 100 lyrics. Remainder mark.

CHARLES II'S FAVOURITE MISTRESS: Pretty, Witty, Nell Gwyn

Book number: 93379 Product format: Hardback Author: SARAH-BETH WATKINS

In stock

Bibliophile price £4.25
Published price £19.99

Nell Gwyn would be aged about 10 when Charles II became king. At this time Nell lived in a slum with her mother and sister but soon she joined the theatre in Drury Lane, initially selling oranges. Women were now allowed to act on stage for the first time and Nell was spotted by two entrepreneurs who began training her as a comedienne. Following a spell in the country when the plague struck, Nell started to make a name for herself and was described by Pepys as "pretty, witty, Nell Gwyn". When her chance came, she directed a wink at the Royal box and was rewarded by an invitation to Charles's apartments. A famous liaison had begun, but Nell had rivals. One of them was the actress Moll Davis, and the jealous Nell contrived to give Moll a laxative before one of her evenings with the King, assisted by her friend Aphra Behn, a well-known female playwright and spy. Nell was much in demand as an actress, performing in plays by Dryden and Ben Jonson as well as more popular entertainments. She was becoming a star, and the King was impressed. He now spent more time with her than with his long-time mistress Barbara Villiers. In 1669 Nell became pregnant and gave birth to a son but was secure in the knowledge that she was now the main mistress, and was granted a house in Pall Mall soon afterwards. Nell was eventually supplanted by Louise de Kerouaille, whom Lady Worcester insulted by calling her a "tall French bitch" before kicking her repeatedly. Nell continued her friendship with the King and his associates such as Rochester until the end of her life, and this book details some fascinating examples of her involvement in political intrigue, including making sure that Charles was visited by a Catholic priest before his death. 184pp, black and white reproductions.

PHALLIC FRENZY: Ken Russell and His Films

Book number: 93409 Product format: Hardback Author: JOSEPH LANZA

Bibliophile price £6.50

Henry Kenneth Alfred "Ken" Russell (1927-2011) made some of the most daring, disturbing, establishment-baiting and beautifully-shot films of all time. His films have been drawn from a wide range of historic, religious and literary references and have offered the viewer not just brazen sensationalism but also food for thought - they horrify yet inspire. Deranged Ursuline nuns, the demons of Mary Shelley and Byron, the sexual angst of Tchaikovsky, Liszt and Mahler, Tommy the messianic pinball wizard, prostitutes, Lady Chatterley, lesbian vampires and frightening sex toys, not to mention Alan Bates and Oliver Reed wrestling in the buff, the list of morally deleterious images to his credit kept Mary Whitehouse and friends in a state of constant outrage, but people kept on coming to his films in their droves. Throughout all this, Russell's puckish and intellectual sense of humour was never far from view, and in this first full biography, far from being a dry film-by-film analysis, we see how Russell's real life was often just as engaging and vibrant as the films he created. As you would expect, the list of characters here is a veritable Who's Who of 20th century film. 365pp, with a wealth of b/w stills and other photos.

1973 ROCK AT THE CROSSROADS

Book number: 93553 Product format: Hardback Author: ANDREW GRANT JACKSON

In stock

Bibliophile price £6.00
Published price £24.99

From Funkadelic to Free Bird, from Iggy to Ozzy to Joni, Bowie, Dylan, Marley, Aretha, Marvin, Elton, and Neil, Jackson wisely knocks down the barricades between rock and soul and pop, between guitars and synthesisers, between gospel choirs and Rastafarian chants and crocodile rock, taking it all in sympathetically and judiciously. Discover 1973, one of the great years in musical history. Ziggy Stardust travelled to America in David Bowie's Aladdin Sane. The Dark Side of the Moon began its 937 week run on the Billboard chart inspired by the madness of Pink Floyd's founder, while four ex-Beatles scored top ten albums, two hitting number one. FM battled AM, and Philly strove to supplant Motown on the airwaves. Led Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy mirrored the rise of funk and reggae. The singer-songwriter movement led by Dylan, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell flourished at the Troubadour and Max's Kansas City, where Springsteen and Marley shared the bill. Photographs include Bowie and Stevie Wonder in a fur coat, hairy mopped New York Dolls and Jagger and Keith Richards backstage with a child. Chapters include AOR, Prog and Yacht Rock, Honky Tonk Heroes, Counter Culture, Country Rock and Quadrophenia, Court and Spark and Headbangers Apotheosis as we keep on truckin' through this slice of modern musical history. With timeline, 428pp, photos.
