£3.25

The follow-up to the bestselling Harlequin, this is the second instalment in Harlequin. Thomas of Hookton travelled to France as an archer and there discovered a shadowy destiny which linked him to a family of heretical French lords who sought Christendom's greatest relic. Set in 1346, Thomas has survived the Battle of Crécy and is sent back to England charged with finding the Holy Grail. But he is an archer and when chance comes to fight against an army invading northern England, he jumps at the chance. Plunged into the carnage of Neville's Cross, he is oblivious to other enemies who want to destroy him and discovers too late that he is not the only person pursuing the Grail. While King Edward III fights in France, England lies exposed to the threat of invasion and Thomas is back in the north just as the Scots invade on behalf of their French allies. After hunting and wounding him, Thomas's rivals for the Grail turn him into a fugitive. Fleeing England, he travels to Normandy, determined to rescue Will Skeat, his old commander from Harlequin. Finally Thomas leads his enemies back to Brittany where he goes to discover an old love and his pursuers at last trap their reluctant pilgrim. We recall that Thomas's father bequeathed him a mysterious notebook confirming the Grail's existence, and all of Europe wants it. 496pp, paperback.

ESSENTIAL PHILOSOPHICAL WORKS

Book number: 65536 Product format: Paperback Author: DAVID HUME

In stock

£5.00

David Hume (1711-1776) was the most important philosopher ever to write in English, as well as a master stylist. This volume contains his major philosophical works. A Treatise of Human Nature (1739-1740), published while Hume was still in his 20s, consists of three books on the understanding, the passions, and morals. It applies the experimental method of reasoning to human nature in a revolution that was intended to make Hume the Newton of the moral sciences. Disappointed with the Treatise's failure to bring about such a revolution, Hume later recast Book I as An Enquiry concerning Human Understanding (1751), and Book III as An Enquiry concerning the Principles of Morals, which he regarded as 'incomparably the best' of all his works. Both Enquiries went through several editions in his lifetime. Hume's works, controversial in his day, remain deeply and widely influential in ours, especially for his contributions to our understanding of the nature of morality, political and economic theory, philosophy of religion, and philosophical naturalism. This volume also includes Hume’s anonymous Abstract of Books I and II of the Treatise, and the short autobiographical essay, ‘My Own Life’, which he wrote just before his death. 860 page paperback. New from Wordsworth.

OFFICIAL HISTORY OF BRITAIN

Book number: 90302 Product format: Hardback Author: BORIS STARLING & D. BRADBURY

In stock

£6.00

Sub-titled 'Our Story In Numbers as Told by the Office for National Statistics' from the Census 2021. What official data past and present tells us about our nation is who we are, what we do and where we live. For the past 200 years, the Census has charted our jobs, home lives and strange cultural habits with questions on occupation, housing, religion, travel and the family. The Census findings have informed the economy, politics and every other national matter and the data collected forms the single most valuable on-going historical resource of modern times. In 1841 there were 734 female midwives working in Britain, along with 9 artificial eye makers, 20 peg makers, six stamp makers and one bee dealer. Fast forward nearly two centuries and there are 51,000 midwives working in the UK, and not a single eye maker in sight! Here is the lowdown on our relationships, cultural beliefs and of course recent findings on COVID-19. There is a great deal on the popularity of 'traditional' names, the trend towards informality with names, the way in which we use the Internet is changing, the gap between what young people wanted to do and how much they envisaged earning and the reality of how they ended up. In 2016 the top five jobs that 16-21 year olds wanted to do included artistic, literary and media (writer, actor, producer), teaching, health professional, police officer or nursing. House building and skyscrapers, working hours and education, a fascinating slice of mass observation. 298pp, diagrams.
